Home Goals 2013

Wow. Where do I even begin?  So much to do and only 365 days {actually less than that now} to do it all most of my list.  Yes, I have to be realistic.

Since last year’s home goals was just about an entire flop, I decided to work my home goals for 2013 just like Dave Ramsey suggests for debt.  The snowball effect.  I’m going to start on small projects first, building momentum and excitement to forge ahead on the bigger, more difficult updates.

Cabinets, Closets, and Clutter

Yes, it is the monster in the closet.  I would show you pictures, but it would cause you to lose sleep.  So just trust me on this one, we do indeed have a bona fide monster in our home and if I were completely honest -and I am, we have more than one.  Sad, so sad. {hangs head in shame}

 Cabinets, Closets, and Clutter List

Unfortunately, most, …ok, all of my closets don’t even come close to resembling the organized space above. I definitely have my work cut out for me.  This category includes all of the following areas in two phases:

Phase #1: Clutter Control

  • hall closet
  • pantry
  • kitchen cabinets (14 total)  -2/14 completed
  • Pop’s closet
  • Girl’s closet
  • linen closet
  • hall bath cabinet
  • master closet
  • master bath cabinet

Phase #2: Organize/Update

  • hall closet
  • pantry
  • kitchen cabinets (14 total)  -2/14 completed
  • Pop’s closet
  • Girl’s closet
  • linen closet
  • hall bath cabinet
  • master closet
  • master bath cabinet

I’ve already begun Phase #1 in some of these areas.  My goal is to complete Phase #1 by the end of January and possibly begin Phase #2 by the end of January.

Paint-o-thon

I think that every square inch of our home needs painted.  I’m not sure what room I should begin in first.  Where would you start?

Room Painting List

  • Living Room/Hallway/Stairwell
  • Kitchen/Dining area
  • Boy’s Room
  • Girls’ Room
  • Hall Bath
  • Master Bedroom (I will  hire someone to do this room. I don’t do high ceilings -as in over 12 ft.)
  • Master Bath
  • Trim Galore
  • Doors All around

As much as I love my kids -which is a ton, I am really eager to get all of their markings off of our walls.  We have lots of crayon art, food smudges, greasy hand prints, etc. on most of our walls.

So tell me, what is your paint preference for different rooms?  Flat, eggshell, semi-gloss?  Kitchen, halls, bedrooms?  I’d love to know.

Floors, Floors, Floors

We currently are blessed to have over 50 boxes of flooring stacked in our living room.  I cannot wait to get it installed, not only to have the pretty wood everywhere but also to get the mammoth stacks out of the way.  -ha!  Fingers crossed that they’re down by my birthday {which is mid-march}.  That will make me happy.

However, all of the bedrooms will still have their carpeting and they need cleaned. I just need to get them done.

Carpet Cleaning List

  • boy’s bedroom carpet
  • girls’ bedroom carpet
  • master bedroom and closet carpet

Outdoor Spaces

We were able to pressure wash and clean all of our windows last year.  It really made a big difference.  After we had that done, Hubs and I re-sealed our deck.  Whoa, people. Talk about the difference a can of stain/seal can do …re-sealing our deck made it like new again.  Gorgeous.  However, the kids’ swing set/fort needs to be re-sealed, our front porch needs a paint job, and while we’re at it, our white rockers and side table can use some extra love as well. This is definitely the year of paint.

I really, really want to have that raised vegetable garden and little herb area on our deck. It did not happen last year, but I have high hopes for this spring.

Outdoor Spaces List

  • front porch
  • rocking chairs and side table
  • swing set/fort
  • raised garden beds/herb garden

Bonus Room and Attic

Work on our bonus room has pretty much slowed to a halt due to the holidays and sickness.  I cannot wait to get up there.  In the meantime, I’m having fun decorating and redecorating the bonus room in my mind. =)

The other side is just needing a lot of grunt work and another good yard sale this spring. Sweat and muscle should greatly help matters in this area.

Upstairs List

  • sort, store, sell, donate and/or discard
  • finish room and decorate {yay!}

Make It Mine

I want to add a special touch to each room.  I have plans for certain areas, but procrastination gets me every time.  Not this time.  This year is going to be different. :)

I don’t really have a list for this one other than listing each room.

Special List

  • living room
  • kitchen
  • hallway
  • hall bath
  • boy’s room
  • girls’ room
  • master bedroom
  • master bath
  • laundry closet (and yes, that is exactly what it is…a closet with bi-fold doors by all of our bedrooms)

I will keep you updated and share pictures of my progress on my facebook page and probably every month or two do an actual blog post on some of the bigger projects.

This is my virtual list and I will do my best to keep it updated with my progress. Besides who doesn’t like to cross things off of a list? Tell me.  =)

Thanks for reading.

Comments

  1. I have yet to even publish my home goals. :( I was going to and then life sort of fell apart – not the way I wanted to begin 2013. Even though I may not be able to get what I wanted done this year because of many reasons, I still think I will publish what I had originally intended. I need a goal, something to work towards even though it might not even be possible to do.

You have some good goals. I have some of the same!

we need to repaint our whole house or at least the space I haven’t already repainted. need to work on clutter for sure – already redid a closet so I guess that counts for getting something done this year! :) need to clean out my “craft hoard” and the garage this year – going to require several truckloads to goodwill or the dump :)

  2. You’ve got me inspired to paint now!! Would love to do the kitchen and dining room a warm beige…no gloss here- it just seems to pick up the fingerprints/grease even more.

    • Wish we could paint together!! Painting is always more fun when you have a friend…and it gets done faster! Sounds like a lovely color. I’m thinking of going white in the living room -not sure though. I agree. I may go back to a flat paint in certain rooms. It was difficult to get good coverage when we painted a satin/eggshell over a flat paint. To this day, I can still see dull spots when the light hits it just right–not to mention all the imperfections of the wall. Thanks for sharing your input.
